What Makes a Bad Boss - Bad?

This is a hell of a good read

Reader Comments About Bad Bosses

Nothing sparks more commentary than asking about what makes a manager a bad boss. With my Web site poll and its lengthy comments thread, I found some common themes in site visitor responses.

Want to avoid becoming a bad boss? Afraid that you may already be considered a bad boss? Just want to commiserate with other people who have bad bosses? Here are your thoughts about what makes a bad boss, well - bad?

Consensus doesn't exist, but several themes occurred most frequently in the comments the site received from readers. Bad bosses, in order of their frequency in the comments thread, do the following.
  • Love brownnosers, tattletales, and relatives who report to them. They choose favorite employees and cover up and make excuses for the poor work of their incompetent favorites. They ignore selected people and discriminate against many employees.
  • Fail to communicate, and may not even have, expectations, timelines or goals. Bad bosses change their minds frequently leaving employees off-balance. Bad bosses change expectations and deadlines frequently.
  • Use disciplinary measures inappropriately when simple, positive communication would correct the problem. Bad bosses ignore employees until there is a problem, then pounce.
  • Speak loudly, rudely, one-sidedly to staff. Bad bosses don't provide the air time for staff to respond to accusations and comments. They intimidate people and bully staff. They allow other employees to bully employees.
  • Take credit for the successes and positive accomplishments of employees. They are equally as quick to blame employees when something goes wrong.
  • Fail to provide rewards or recognition for positive employee performance.
These six were the top "bad boss" characteristics cited by readers. The following came up less frequently but were contributed by more than one reader. The bad boss:
  • Is not qualified for the boss job by either skills or experience.
  • Will not let go of problems or mistakes. The bad boss returns to discuss negative events continually and searches for faults in employees.
  • Will not accept constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement. The bad boss can't deal with disagreement from employees who have their own opinions about work related issues.
  • Lacks integrity, breaks promises, and is dishonest.
  • Does not have the courage to deal with a difficult situation despite knowing that it is the right thing to do.
  • Causes dissention among staff members by his or her actions and comments.
Reader comments also made the point that a lot of bad boss behavior is enabled, or at least allowed, by the boss's bad boss.

These comments provide a snapshot about what employees believe makes a bad boss. Listen and learn or listen and commisserate. For the full flavor of the comments - I can't capture them in a summary - please visit the original "comments" thread about bad bosses.

The Unnecessary...

On the job, there are some things that we can prevent by making logical and practical decisions. This I have learned by making wrong ones as well as excellent ones over the many years as part of the labor force and eventually as a decision maker. And there are those things that are beyond our control... much like the weather, we are at its mercy.

Now for the life of me, over the last ten years of this company's existence, people seemed not to have learned from experience. It is as if I am destined to watch the same decision-making mistakes over and over again. That makes some of the stresses suffered from work "unnecessary"...

Pride + Prejudice = Mistake

As a rule, a company's priority would be to deliver the services and/or products to your customers... that's it. All decisions therefore is simply a means to achieve this end. Anything beyond it should be of minor concern. If a manager's hobby is that of rocking the boat, then he should be be out of the equation. But then again, what if he is higher than a manager?

the crown

The crown is a teaser video meant to experiment for a mini music video I want to do with Belo as an insert to the pageant program. I chose this theme since I thought that Belo fits the role fairly well since all her family are avid shooters and gun owners.

So we did a test shoot along with some photography on the side and we were convinced that she can carry the role pretty well...

Cebu Trip 082311

With the new property acquisition, I expect trips to Cebu to be more frequent. Although I really don't like how the new managers are, in way of the treatment I get as VP since they are so unlike their predecessors and given that they have no institutional memory at all about this company, I really don't give a @*^$=*^ since I don't go there for them anyway. I go there for the staff and the performers.

Finally!

I started dreaming of this since May of last year. After all the frustrations and heartache, it's finally done. So next week is the beginning of a new adventure...

"I told you so!"

Those are the words I wanted to utter as I heard about complaints about the show, about the employees, about the performers, just about everything... enough said.

STARCRAZED!

Working today is generally inefficient because the final scenes for ABS-CBN's Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin chose the MFC to be their venue. My secretary and my other staff went goo-goooo as celebrity actors went about their business. So the picture hunt went on...

three days in thailand...

The Chairman decides to send us off to a little field trip in Thailand so that we could do a little R&R and R&D. The little excursion was an eye opener for those who has not seen the other shows in Pattaya and Bangkok who were among our top influences in putting up the same kind of business ten years ago. So we took the weekend and put in a very tight schedule for this field trip.

at the Centennial airport in Manila

at the Immigration Section of the Centennial airport in Manila

on board PR 730

at the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok figuring out the baggage claim area

road trip to Pattaya, about an hour and a half (well, Joey and Eman seemed happy)

while Elmir seemed happier...

the room at the Siam View Residences

First meal in Thailand was in a shabu shabu restaurant inside the central mall

the Alcazar Cabaret frontage...

the Alcazar Show...

infront of Alcazar Cabaret with Hojin taking some snaps

infront of Alcazar Cabaret (damn, I'm never in the picture, I was the photographer of the trip)

Tiffany's Show...

infront of the Tiffany's Show

beer! beer! beer!

drinking time with some meat dishes near Tiffany's

happy to be riding near walking street after Direk Elmir subjected us to a 45 minute death march

checking for messages?

Brunch at a nearby restaurant... Thai food is really good!

After lunch we chartered another van back to Bangkok where we stayed at the Asia Hotel where Calypso Cabaret performs nightly...

Calypso Cabaret

Eman

Late dinner at a nearby restaurant

woke up early for breakfast...

They're not smiling about the food... believe me

so we can check out and head on to the airport

infront of Suvarnabhumi Airport for the return trip to Manila

where we saw our former performer, Japjap

as Elmir walked

and Tantan shopped

while Eman posed

It was a fruitful trip... the only thing left now is report and hopefully solicit actions

Almost a year :)
